Virgins to be rewarded for tying the knot

A Ugandan kingdom is to introduce a reward for girls who are virgins when they marry.

The Buganda minister of health says families with virgins will be given an incentive to encourage them to revive the dying tradition.

He said he was booed by university students when he told them about the scheme.

The students, from Makerere University Nkobazambogo, said it was old fashioned and should be scrapped.

AllAfrica.com reports Robert Ssebunya told The New Vision: "In the past, virginity was an important component and girls used to get married at the right age while they were still virgins. This was cherished by the Baganda."

He added: "When girls stay in school, it delays their marriage."

Mr Ssebunya said the kingdom would ensure families of girls with such good morals are given prizes as a sign of appreciation for bringing up their children well.
